Understanding and Treating Scar Tissue

Scar tissue is part of the body’s natural healing process, acting as a sort of Band-Aid to a larger problem. After an injury occurs, scar tissue begins to form in order to better connect tissues so they can heal. Scar tissue is much weaker than healthy connective tissue, which helps explain why it’s far easier to reinjure a part of your body than one you’ve never hurt before.

Normal, healthy tissue has a consistent form to allow for natural flexibility and contraction of muscles. When tissues tear or suffer damage, part of the affected area is replaced by scar tissue that will ultimately shorten soft tissues, therefore reducing flexibility and strength. Scar tissue contracts and deforms the tissues around it, making it very easy to reinjure the area in question.

There are a few ways to fight off scar tissue. Immediately after the injury occurs, its important to limit the potential for scar tissue to develop. The RICER treatment is a simple and effective response to injuries within the first 72 hours. RICER stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and Referral. Resting and icing the afflicted area along with compression can reduce swelling and bleeding, therefore reducing short-term pain. Keeping the area elevated will limit blood flow, but seeking additional medical treatment after an injury is the best way to ensure long-term, positive healing.

Removing scar tissue is another matter entirely. There are several techniques we use to break down scar tissue and promote proper muscle movement and flexibility and our physicians can help determine which treatments are best for you. The primary goal when treating scar tissue is to break down and manipulate fibrous adhesions to encourage muscular relaxation and ultimately relieve pain.

We have many techniques and tools we incorporate into our individualized treatment regiments that can help athletes at every level reduce pain, increase strength and flexibility, and help them get back to enjoying their favorite activities again. If you suffer from a nagging sports injury or need help with your injury rehabilitation process, contact Velo Sports Rehab and we’ll begin planning a treatment regiment specific to your body’s needs.
